A man shot by a Lakewood police officer was recovering Thursday from wounds that are not life-threatening, police spokesman Chris Lawler said.
The shooting happened about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday outside apartments in the 8100 block of 83rd Avenue Southwest.
Lawler said the officer responded to a report of a suicidal man, and as he waited for other officers to arrive, the man confronted him. The officer called over the radio that the man had a gun, and that shots were fired, Lawler said.
It wasn’t clear Thursday whether the man had fired at the officer, or pointed a gun at him. A firearm was found near the man at the scene, according to police.

The officer fired and hit the man in the abdomen, Lawler said. The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Police did not release the officer’s name Thursday.
They expected to identify him and to have more information about what happened after the officer is interviewed.
He’s been on the force for 10 years, and in law enforcement for more than 13. He’s on administrative leave following the shooting, per procedure.
