An 86-year-old University Place man was arrested early Tuesday on suspicion of vehicular assault after Washington State Patrol troopers said he caused a head-on wreck on Interstate 5 in Tacoma.
A 36-year-old Tulalip woman was hurt in the crash and taken to St. Joseph Medical Center for treatment.
The wrecked occurred about 10:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-5 near the Tacoma Dome.
Troopers said the University Place man somehow got onto the freeway heading north in the southbound lanes.
His SUV first hit a Dodge Caravan driven by a Spanaway man before veering into another lane and striking head-on a car carrying two adults and two children. The injured woman was riding in the car, troopers said.
Troopers reported that the University Place man might have been under the influence of either drugs or alcohol.
