Railroad not affected by shooting suspects’ crash into Tacoma tracks

A man shot in Tacoma Saturday is expected to survive, and train tracks police said the suspects crashed into are not affected.

The shooting happened in the 3500 block of East L Street, when a fight between men in their late 20s and early 30s led to gunfire, police spokeswoman Loretta Cool said.

One man was shot, and was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, Cool said.

Two others, suspects in the shooting, left the scene, and crashed into the train tracks on a curve along Schuster Parkway, according to police.

One of the men tried to flee from officers by jumping into Commencement Bayand swimming for about 50 feet, before he got too cold, swam back, and was taken into custody, Cool said.

Both men were arrested on unrelated warrants.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman Gus Melonas said rail operations were not seriously impacted by the wreck.
