Man who prompted overnight SWAT standoff in Puyallup arrested

A man who prompted an overnight SWAT standoff in Puyallup in December after allegedly leaving a pipe bomb on his deck was arrested Wednesday.

Investigators found Anthony Lopez, 25, at a Tacoma motel and took him into custody.

Lopez has been on the run since Dec. 12, when officers went to a home in the 2000 block of Eighth Street Court Southwest to serve a state Department of Corrections warrant for Lopez alleging escape from community custody.

Police saw a pipe bomb on the deck and called in a bomb squad and negotiators to speak with Lopez, who they believed was inside the house with his girlfriend and 3-year-old child.

Neighbors were moved and the SWAT team surrounded the home for nearly 13 hours before going inside. No one was in the house and police were unable to find Lopez.

Pierce County prosecutors declined to file charges concerning the pipe bomb. It was unclear whether Lopez will face federal charges in connection with the incident.

He is awaiting trial for possession of a controlled substance after he allegedly was found in a store with heroin and methamphetamine while on community custody, according to court records.
