Deputies: Man strangled wife, tried to kill himself at Tacoma-area home

A Pierce County man allegedly strangled his wife Thursday and then slit his own throat before sheriff’s deputies forced their way into his Parkland-area home and arrested him.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the woman as 59-year-old Valerie Brown.

The 57-year-old man called 911 about 9 a.m. and told dispatchers he’d killed his 59-year-old wife inside their home in the 10400 block of Sheridan Avenue South.

Deputies responded and forced their way inside the two-story blue house. They found the man locked in the bathroom and suffering from a cut to the neck, sheriff’s spokesman Jerry Bates said.

The man was taken into custody. He underwent surgery and was expected to survive.

Bates said sheriff’s deputies responded to the couple’s home Dec. 28 when the man allegedly attempted suicide. He was voluntarily committed with unknown mental health issues.

There have been no reports of domestic violence at their residence, Bates said.

A motive for the slaying remained unknown.
