A man leaped in front of a semitrailer Friday near Fife, the Washington State Patrol reported.
The truck hit the man, who was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center. He was listed in serious condition.
The truck driver is not believed to have been at fault, trooper Guy Gill said, noting that brake marks on the road showed he tried to stop.
The incident happened about 11:45 a.m. on state Route 99/Pacific Highway East near 67th Avenue.
The man was walking toward traffic on the shoulder of the northbound lanes.
“The truck driver noticed the pedestrian was looking at him, which raised the hairs on the back of his neck,” trooper Guy Gill said. “The pedestrian jumped out in front of the truck and was struck.”
The driver was not hurt.
Both directions of state Route 99 were closed from 62nd Avenue to 70th Avenue while investigators processed the scene.
