A woman died and her daughter is recovering at the hospital from serious injuries after a wreck Sunday in Sumner, according to family.

Helen Stolp, 76 of the Sumner-Auburn area, died Sunday, her family said. Her 55-year-old daughter is recovering at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, said her niece, Chrissy Lang of Tacoma.

Lang said Wednesday she expected her aunt to be at the hospital for at least a couple of months as she heals.

The head-on crash happened Jan. 7 in the 1800 block of East Valley Highway East. The man driving the other vehicle was released from the hospital, Sumner police spokeswoman Carmen Palmer said.

Palmer said the cause of the crash is being investigated.

Lang said her grandmother and aunt were driving to meet her so that she could care for her grandmother, who suffered from dementia. Her aunt, who is studying to be a drug and alcohol counselor, was going to be in class.

The pair never arrived.

Lang said a police officer answered her aunt’s phone when Lang called, and the officer told her what had happened.

Lang’s family is raising money to help with burial expenses and medical bills at gofundme.com/kb4908.
