Two killed in ATV crash in Greenwater

Two people were killed Friday when the ATV they were riding on hit a tree in Greenwater, officials said Monday.

Chad Walstad, 23, and Stacia Klinkhammer, 20, drove a mile up U.S. Forest Service Road 73 on Friday with the intention of camping with friends for two nights. The site is off state Route 410.

About 11:30 p.m., the pair decided to go for a ride on Walstad’s ATV. Neither was wearing a helmet.

“They took a corner too fast and collided with trees,” Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Jerry Bates said.

Friends went looking for Walstad and Klinkhammer on Saturday when they didn’t return and found their bodies. Paramedics pronounced the two dead at the scene.

Klinkhammer was studying business marketing at Western Oregon University, according to her Facebook page. She was from Black Diamond.

Walstad lived in Bonney Lake.
