Man who died after leaping from moving truck on I-5 identified

Officials have identified the man who died Friday after jumping out of a moving truck on an Interstate 5 onramp in Fife as a 34-year-old Spokane man.

The man was riding in the backseat of the pickup about 5 p.m. when he opened the door and jumped as the driver hit the gas to merge on the onramp at 54th Avenue East, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The truck was going about 35 miles per hour at the time, trooper Guy Gill said.

The News Tribune is not naming the man because the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office has yet to determine whether the death was an accident or suicide.

The man was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, where he died Saturday night.

He wasn’t arguing with anyone inside the truck before he jumped, Gill said.

The driver was not expected to face charges.

The investigation is ongoing.
