Police: Man switched plates on stolen vehicle, fled officers, crashed

Puyallup police said a man caught switching the license plates on the stolen vehicle he was driving wrecked that car shortly after they pursued him Tuesday.

Someone saw the man taking the plates off a Acura Integra about 4 p.m. outside the South Hill Mall, and putting them on the stolen car he was driving, also an Acura, police spokesman Scott Engle said.

When police found the man and tried to stop him, he fled with a female passenger, at one point driving through a grass median and losing his bumper on his way to state Route 512, Engle said.

Police quickly stopped their pursuit on the highway.

The suspect kept going, and hit a minivan as he exited state Route 512 to Meridian, causing the van to roll multiple times, Engle said.

No one was seriously injured. The man and woman in the suspect vehicle suffered minor wounds.

Police closed South Meridian Street near the wreck as they investigated.
