A 19-year-old man was critically injured Monday when the SUV he was riding in left the roadway and hit two trees in Puyallup.
The crash occurred about 2 a.m. at 39th Avenue Southeast when the driver lost control of the SUV where the road turns into 37th Avenue Southeast. Police said the driver was drunk.
“It launched off the roadway in the trees and sheared off two trees,” police Capt. Scott Engle said.
The driver, also a 19-year-old man, ran away after the accident. Officers found him at a nearby gas station and arrested him.

His passenger was taken to an area hospital with critical injuries.
Police closed 39th Avenue Southeast for several hours to investigate the crash scene. The road reopened just before 9 a.m.
