Girl, 7, found in Lakewood pool dies

A 7-year-old girl found Monday at the bottom of a pool in Lakewood died Wednesday, police said.

The King County Medical Examiner’s Office identified her as Mariam Yakub Thursday, and said her death, due to drowning, was an accident.

West Pierce Fire & Rescue was called to the Legacy Park Apartments on 92nd Street South about 7:20 p.m. Monday after someone spotted the girl at the bottom of the complex pool.

It was unclear what caused the girl to go underwater or whether she knew how to swim.

A witness performed CPR on the girl before she was taken to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital. She died about 5 p.m. Wednesday.
