Pierce County woman pleads not guilty in starvation death of Great Dane

A Pierce County woman accused of starving her Great Dane to death pleaded not guilty Thursday to first-degree animal cruelty.

Melissa Ramos, 29, was released on personal recognizance pending trial, and banned from owning or caring for animals until the court says otherwise.

A veterinarian reported concerns about 2-year-old Zeus’ weight to animal control officers in January, and Ramos failed to get the dog sufficient treatment, according to charging papers.

She brought the dog to a clinic Jan. 28 after he died, at a weight of 55 pounds, the court records state.
