Lakewood apartment fire forces 2 to leap

Two people leaped out of an apartment complex in Lakewood early Monday after a fire burned through the building.

West Pierce firefighters were called about 4 a.m. to the Union Crest apartment at 14820 Union Ave. SW and found the second story fully in flames.

Two residents had already jumped when crews arrived. One was taken to the hospital and was reported in stable condition. Three others drove themselves to the hospital.

Firefighters rescued five dogs from the blaze.

A cause has not been determined.

The 16 apartments in the building were affected by the fire so all residents were displaced, according to West Pierce Fire & Rescue. The Red Cross was helping with temporary housing.
