Man pleads not guilty in Sumner wreck that killed woman, 76

A 20-year-old man pleaded not guilty Monday in connection with the death of a 76-year-old woman after a January wreck in Sumner.

Justice Heckart is charged with vehicular homicide and vehicular assault in the Jan. 7 wreck that killed Helen Stolp and seriously injured her 55-year-old daughter.

Court Commissioner Meagan Foley set his bail at $100,000, and said that if Hekard is released pending trial, he’s not to drive.

Heckart has epilepsy, and had been told by his doctor not to drive, according to charging papers.

Pierce County prosecutors said he tried to pass another car in the 1800 block of East Valley Highway and crossed into the oncoming lane, hitting the womens’ vehicle head-on.

He was unconscious when officers arrived, and likely had suffered an epileptic seizure, according to charging papers.

Court records did not list his attorney.
