Extra boating patrols will be done on Commencement Bay and other waterways this weekend to discourage drinking alcohol on the water.
The patrols will monitor boaters Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Police from Tacoma, Lakewood and Gig Harbor, as well as Pierce County sheriff’s marine units, will participate in the nationwide crackdown on boating under the influence.
Operation Dry Water is held annually.
Officials say alcohol is the leading cause of fatal boat accidents. Last year, about 21 percent of boating deaths were caused by drinking alcohol.
