A man died early Sunday when the car he was driving hit a tree near Summit.
He was identified as 25-year-old Mickey Dawley of Spanaway, the Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office said.
A witness said the 1998 Mazda 626 was going more than 85 mph before it crashed about 5:30 a.m. in the 8100 block of Canyon Road East, Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.
Speed was a factor, Troyer said.
The vehicle was heading north when it drifted across the oncoming lane, left the road, hit the tree and rolled on its top.
Dawley was ejected and was found about 20 feet from the car. He was not wearing a seat belt.
No one else was in the vehicle.
