Woman killed in 2-car hit-and-run crash on Pacific Avenue in Parkland

A 25-year-old man involved in a 2-car collision Saturday afternoon on Pacific Avenue in Parkland ran from the wreck on foot, according to the Washington State Patrol. Troopers said a woman driving the other car was killed.

The fleeing driver was later located and taken into custody by the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department with assistance from WSP, Trooper Robert Reyer said. He said the man, from Puyallup, would be booked into jail on suspicion of vehicular homicide, felony hit-and-run and eluding. He had warrants for his arrest and his license had been suspended.

It occurred at about 3:10 p.m. on the state route at 143rd Street South. Reyer said the woman was in a sedan turning left to go south onto Pacific Avenue from 143rd Street when the other driver, traveling north in a sedan, collided with her car. The vehicles had no other occupants. It wasn’t yet clear whether speeding or impairment were factors in the crash.

The Washington State Department of Transportation, WSP, the Sheriff’s Department and Central Pierce Fire & Rescue responded to the incident, Reyer said in a tweet. The woman driving the other car was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. She was later pronounced dead.

Reyer said troopers and Sheriff’s Department deputies searched the area for the driver who fled.

Pacific Avenue was fully blocked in both directions while responders were on the scene. At about 5:40 p.m., traffic was being detoured around the wreck at 136th and 146th streets south.

The collision was the second deadly hit-and-run in Pierce County in two days. On Friday, a driver fled after fatally striking a motorcyclist on state Route 16 in a 3-vehicle crash in Tacoma. Later that day, troopers arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of vehicular homicide.
