A shooting that injured a man in Fife led to a 35-minute car chase, involving Federal Way, Fife, Milton and Tacoma police, authorities said Friday.

The man who fled from police has been booked into jail on suspicion of felony aggravated assault, said Aaron Gardner, Fife assistant police chief.

About 7:45 p.m. Thursday, Fife police received multiple calls of a disturbance that included many people in an argument in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 2400 block of 62nd Street East, police said.

A minute later, Fife police got calls reporting gunshots in the same area and people running away, police said.

Police arrived to a man in his forties with a gunshot wound. He was taken by medical aid to a local hospital, Gardner said.

Officers and detectives asked witnesses about the shooting and were given the description of a car and a suspect, according to police.

At 9:06 they got a call from another officer, who had found a stolen car driven by the person witnesses had identified, Gardner said. The man did not stop for the officer, and a pursuit began.

Police chased the car on state Route 509 through Fife, Federal Way and Milton. Officers from all those cities responded, police say. At Alexander Avenue and Route 509, the man drove into oncoming traffic, and Fife police stopped their chase.

The suspect got off the highway shortly thereafter in Tacoma, and Tacoma police began their chase, police said.

The driver crashed the stolen car in the 4800 block of 20th Street East in Tacoma, Gardner said. He then jumped out and began running.

It’s unclear how the crash happened. The car might have run into a power pole or been taken off the road by officers using a pursuit intervention technique, Gardner said.

After a 35-minute pursuit, at 9:35 p.m., Tacoma and Fife police were able to chase down and apprehend the man, police say. He was taken to the hospital for unspecified injuries related to the crash.

Fife police booked him Friday morning, police said.
