Truck driver who died in Lakewood collision with alleged robbers has been identified

The Pierce County Medical Examier’s Office has identified the semi-truck driver killed June 29 in a collision with alleged teenage robbers in Lakewood.

Tacoma resident Bohdan Vetrov, 57, died after he was thrown from his truck’s cab and fell from an overpass onto Interstate 5. He died of multiple blunt-force trauma and his death was determined to be accidental.

The incident happened at the on-ramp to southbound I-5 from Berkeley Street Southwest, near American Lake. The 16-year-old suspects were allegedly attempting to flee in a stolen vehicle from police when they struck Vetrov’s truck.

The two teenagers were charged June 30 in Pierce County Juvenile Court for allegedly fleeing from Lakewood police after a robbery, then colliding into Vetrov’s truck. Vetrov, who was not wearing a seat belt, was transported to Madigan Army Medical Center where he died of his injuries.

Prosecutors charged one boy with vehicular homicide and unlawful possession of a stolen vehicle. The other was charged with taking a motor vehicle without permission.
