A pickup driver is accused of stabbing a motorcyclist on the highway between Sumner and Bonney Lake following a fit of road rage Tuesday.

Pierce County deputies were dispatched to a stabbing in the 17100 block of state Route 410 at 3:03 p.m. The 911 caller reported that he had been stabbed in the chest, according to a news release.

When deputies arrived, they detained the pickup driver while a Sumner police officer provided first aid to the motorcyclist. Fire personnel later took over medical treatment, the release said.

Deputies learned that the motorcyclist and pickup driver got into an argument on 166th Avenue East. The motorcycle was letting vehicles make left turns in front of him when he had the right of way. The truck drove around the motorcycle onto eastbound Route 410, the release said.

Halfway up the hill, the driver pulled into a restaurant parking lot and the motorcyclist followed. The two started arguing and bumped chests before the pickup truck driver allegedly stabbed the other man. The motorcyclist then used a pocket knife to flatten one of the pickup truck’s tires so he could not leave, the release said. The two then waited for police to arrive.

Deputies arrested the 64-year-old pickup truck driver for first-degree assault. The 38-year-old motorcyclist was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the release said.
