Shots fired at Pierce County deputies during stolen-vehicle pursuit in Parkland

Two men were arrested after they allegedly fired shots at Pierce County deputies while driving a stolen vehicle Thursday in Parkland.

Patrol deputies spotted a stolen green Chevy Tahoe at 1:56 a.m. in a restaurant parking lot at Garfield Street South and Pacific Avenue South. The driver in the Chevy backed out of the parking lot when deputies turned around to contact him, according to the Sheriff’s Department on Facebook.

Deputies turned on their lights and sirens to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver did not stop. A pursuit began after the Chevy turned west onto 122nd Street South and accelerated, the post said.

The driver allegedly brake-checked deputies two times, the post said. The people in the Chevy allegedly fired shots at the deputies during the second brake-check. The gunshots did not strike the deputies.

Additional deputies, Washington State Patrol troopers and police officers joined the pursuit. The post said that the Chevy collided with a guardrail in the 9700 block of Yakima Avenue South. The alleged shooters ran away from the car.

One of the alleged shooters was quickly apprehended, the post said. Deputies initiated a K-9 track to search for the second alleged shooter.

A nearby resident reported to 911 that someone was sleeping in his vehicle, the post said. Deputies found the man hiding in a pickup truck and arrested him.

The men were evaluated at the hospital since they were involved in the crash, the post said. The 43-year-old and 27-year-old men were booked into Pierce County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, drive-by shooting and possession of a stolen vehicle.

Several firearms, spent shell casings, gun parts and methamphetamine were located at the crash scene, the post said. The Chevy was towed, and deputies planned to seek a search warrant for it.
