Man killed following high-speed crash in Spanaway. Driver hospitalized and in custody

A police pursuit on state Route 7 in Spanaway led to a crash that killed one person Saturday.

A Washington State Patrol trooper saw a Lexus sedan driving in and out of traffic at high speed about 4 p.m. on state Route 7, also known as Pacific Avenue South. The trooper caught up to the car and activated his lights to pull over the driver, Pierce County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. Darren Moss told The News Tribune.

The driver accelerated, lost control and struck a Ford F-150 pickup. The Lexus’ passenger, a 50-year-old man, died at the scene. The 44-year-old driver of the Ford was hospitalized with serious injuries, Moss said.

He said the Lexus’ 24-year-old driver got out of the car and was walking around before he was placed into police custody. He is being treated in the hospital before he will be booked into the Pierce County Jail on suspicion of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault

Toxicology results of the Lexus driver are pending. The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the crash.
