Spanaway man killed by friend in accidental shooting

An 18-year-old man showing off a gun he’d just bought accidentally shot a friend in the head Saturday, killing him.

The victim was identified as Alatino Bolden, 18, of Spanaway.

On Monday, Pierce County prosecutors charged Isaac Nettles, 18, with first-degree manslaughter. A judge set bail at $10,000 and ordered Nettles be placed under the supervision of his uncle, who lives in Tacoma.

The shooting happened after five friends gathered about 3:45 p.m. Saturday at Bolden’s house in the 14900 block of 12th Avenue East. Nettles pulled out a .38-caliber revolver he’d recently bought for $50 and was showing it off.

Investigators said he legally bought the gun.

“He thought he had ejected all the rounds but one had not,” Pierce County sheriff’s Detective Lynelle Anderson said. “While horsing around with the gun, it fired and one struck his friend in the head.”

Bolden’s family members, who were home at the time, performed CPR while waiting for help to arrive. Bolden later died at the hospital.

“It’s a horrible tragedy,” Anderson said.

Although Nettles emptied four rounds out of the gun, a fifth was lodged in the gun, court records show.
