Tacoma police find roughly 50 shell casings after reports of shots fired, 1 hurt

A woman was critically injured early Tuesday morning inside a Tacoma residence when gunfire erupted in the city’s South End, according to police. Officers reportedly found about 50 shell casings in the roadway.

Callers reported shots fired shortly after 4 a.m. in the 8800 block of South D Street, officer Shelbie Boyd said. She said multiple people were inside a house when the victim was struck. The woman was transported to a hospital.

“She was alert and talking. They considered her critical because she sustained more than one wound,” Boyd said.

A Ring camera at the home captured video of three people approaching from the street in dark clothing. Each appeared to fire shots for about two seconds.

Joseph Glover, 25, shared the video with The News Tribune. He said his girlfriend’s 21-year-old sister was grazed six times.

“We were sleeping in bed and at first I heard a really loud blast, a couple actually,” Glover said. “And then I heard — her little sister started screaming from her room. That’s when I really jumped out of bed. I was just waking up, and it was really hard to process what was happening at first.”

Glover said the victim was bleeding profusely when she came out of her room, and he heard a car speed off in the distance. Another person in the house called 911. He said the victim stabilized once she was at the hospital and was discharged Tuesday afternoon.

Glover said he’s lived in Tacoma for about four years, and he sometimes hears gunfire on his street. But he said he never thought something like this would happen directly to him. Glover said he thought their house might have been targeted by mistake.

“We’re all very shaken up by it,” Glover said.

Boyd said she didn’t know if the shooting was intentional to the residence or if other homes were also shot.

“Neighbors may wake up this morning and have damage, too,” she added.

No arrests have been made. Boyd said a forensics team was still at the scene at about 8:30 a.m.
