Pierce County Jail inmate dies from natural causes

A woman has died while incarcerated at the Pierce County Jail, the sheriff’s department said.

The 27-year-old Puyallup-area woman was found unconscious in a bunk bed about 1 a.m. Wednesday, sheriff’s spokesman Jerry Bates said. She was not breathing and did not have a pulse.

Her name was Sara Watkins-Kitt, and she died of natural causes, due to heart failure, the Pierce County medical examiner’s office said.

Deputies tried to give medical aid before she was taken to Tacoma General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 2:15 a.m.

The woman did not appear to have been involved in a struggle and had not suffered any injury during her arrest, Bates said, and there are no signs of foul play or suicide.

Watkins-Kitt was booked into the jail early Tuesday for an alleged probation violation, he said.

Other details of her death will be determined after toxicology results are available, Bates said.
