Two friends were sitting in a Puyallup bedroom listening to music Tuesday when a handgun went off.
Puyallup police said 18-year-old Sabrena Defreece was struck and died. The 19-year-old man who was holding the gun was interviewed for hours and booked into the Pierce County Jail.
Police are trying to determine whether the shooting was accidental or deliberate.
“He had a handgun out while they were just kind of hanging out,” police Capt. Scott Engle said. “While he was handling the handgun, it went off and he shot her.”

The man told detectives he thought the gun was unloaded.
Two others were in the house at the time of the shooting — one man and one woman. Somebody called 911 about 7 a.m.
When officers arrived at the home in the 900 block of 18th Avenue Southwest, they found Defreece dead.
The suspected shooter lived in the home where the shooting took place. The victim did not.
