Motorcyclist killed in collision; investigation underway

A motorcyclist in his mid-50s died Friday following a collision with a car near the intersection of East 59th Street and Portland Avenue East, according to Tacoma police.

The incident happened at 3:46 p.m., said police spokeswoman Loretta Cool. The car, headed south on Portland Avenue, turned left in front of the motorcyclist, who was headed north.

“The motorcyclist did not survive,” Cool said.

There were no other injuries, but the incident forced the closure of Portland Avenue for at least two hours, Cool said. She did not know the condition of the driver, or whether alcohol or drugs played a role. The incident is under investigation.
