UW Tacoma’s role in the community is focus of public lecture Thursday

The president of Portland State University will be in Tacoma on Thursday (Jan. 15) to discuss the role the University Washington Tacoma can play in the surrounding community.

Wim Wiewel is the featured speaker of the second annual Debra Friedman Lecture, planned for 6 p.m. at UW Tacoma’s William W. Philip Hall, 1918 Pacific Avenue. The event is free but registration is required. Register online at

Wiewel will speak about what it takes for an urban university to develop a relationship with the surrounding community, including physical, social, cultural and economic implications.

Since becoming president at PSU in 2008, Wiewel has helped grow relationships with businesses, government and civic and community organizations. He will draw on these experiences in his UWT talk.

UWT’s urban studies department is sponsoring the lecture created to honor the memory of the late Chancellor Debra Friedman, who headed the school from 2011-2014.
