Three Tacoma charter schools that plan to open this fall will host a block party festival from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday March 14 at Bethlehem Baptist Church, 4818 E. Portland Ave., Tacoma.
The event, also sponsored by World Vision, will include free food, prizes and kids’ activities, as well as information about the three schools. All three have initial application periods closing soon.
The three charters are:
• SOAR Academy, which will eventually be open to students in kindergarten through grade eight, although it will enroll only kindergarten and first grade students for this fall. SOAR stands for Success, Outcomes, Arts and Rigor.
SOAR’s initial application period closes Sunday March 15. The school is located at 2136 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, in the Hilltop neighborhood.
• Green Dot Charter Middle School will serve students in grades six through eight, but is enrolling sixth-graders only this first year. Initial application period at Green Dot ends Wednesday March 18.
Green Dot plans to occupy the former Rogers Elementary School at 1301 E. 34th St., on Tacoma’s East Side. The Tacoma School District closed the school in 2002, and sold it to a church, which subsequently sold it to a Mercer Island investor.
• Summit Olympus High School, enrolling only ninth graders this year, will open in a building near the Tacoma Dome, at 409 Puyallup Ave.
Summit’s initial application period closes Friday March 13.
