Auburn schools superintendent announces his retirement

Kip Herren, Auburn School District superintendent since 2008, announced his retirement at Monday night’s school board meeting. He will retire effective July 1.

Herren has worked in the Auburn School District since 1979 as a teacher, coach and principal at Auburn High School. In 1997, Herren was named assistant superintendent and then deputy superintendent in 2001. He replaced Linda Cowan as the district leader in 2008. In 2014, the Washington Association of School Administrators chose Herren as the State Superintendent of the Year.

The Auburn School Board plans an executive session special meeting on Saturday.

In an email to school district staff Herren said, “The Auburn School District is blessed with an incredible, dedicated staff and you have inspired me every day. I wish to thank you for your belief and support in my leadership as superintendent the last seven years. It has been the most rewarding and productive period of my 41 years in public education.”
