Lakewood principal earns state honor

The Association of Washington School Principals has named Taj Jensen , principal of Tyee Park Elementary School in Lakewood, as the Washington State Elementary Principal of the Year.

Jensen began working in the Clover Park School District in 2009 as principal of Tillicum Elementary School. He became the principal of Tyee Park in 2014.

“Under Taj’s leadership, Tillicum was named a School of Distinction for two years in a row,” said district Superintendent Debbie LeBeau. “We are very proud of Taj and his staff and this recognition is well deserved.”

Jensen competed with 18 regional winners and was selected by a team of 10 principals from across the state as one of three finalists. The team visited Tyee Park and

Tillicum Elementary Schools, along with the schools of the other finalists. They interviewed staff, parents and students at each school.

They described Jensen as someone with “ a sharp focus on student success and as a truly collaborative leader who has a passion for all students,” said Jerry Bender of the principals’ association.

In October, the organization will send Jensen and a guest on an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, D.C. where he will be recognized along with the other state elementary principals of the year.
