Police, fire departments will use closed Fircrest school for practice drills starting this week

Officers from the Fircrest Police Department will participate in an active shooter training this week at the closed Wainwright Elementary School site, 130 Alameda Ave., in Fircrest.

The training will take place Wednesday April 1, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Officers will role-play various scenarios that simulate an active shooter in mock scenes, while practicing rescue and tactical strategies.

What to expect:

You can call Fircrest Police Chief John Cheesman at 253-565-1198 for questions about the training.

Additionally, Tacoma firefighters will conduct search and rescue training at Wainwright on April 7, 9, 10 and 14, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

What to expect:

Call Captain Lee Law at the Tacoma Fire Department at 253-591-5726 for questions about the search and rescue drills.

Tacoma Public Schools said these types of trainings and drills will occur on an ongoing basis throughout the spring. Plans for the rebuilding of a new school on the Wainwright site that is set to begin in June will not be impacted, the district said.
