Santorno receives honorary doctorate
University of Puget Sound President Ronald Thomas awarded Tacoma Public Schools Superintendent Carla Santorno an honorary doctorate at the university’s May commencement ceremonies.
The university recognized that during the time Santorno has led Tacoma schools, the graduation rates increased to 83 percent in 2015 from 55 percent in 2010.
It pointed to her involvement in closing the achievement gap between white students and students of color.

Willie Stewart honored by KBTC-TV
Willie Stewart, a former educator and Tacoma School Board member, recently was recognized with the inaugural William P. Mohler Community Impact Award from KBTC Public Television.
He was honored for his community work in support of lifelong learning.
Stewart has been a teacher, a principal at Lincoln High School and a School Board member, along with volunteering in many community organizations.
New resource center for Life Christian students
Life Christian Academy recently announced plans to create the Tyler Saugen Resource Center, which will be open to students at the Tacoma school in this fall.
The center will include a consolidated, expanded, state-of-the-art space for the academy’s Learning Is For Everyone Program.
It will have a media center and technology teaching lab.
Construction and furnishing of the resource center was funded by a gift from Doug and Vicki Saugen of Lakewood, whose son Tyler attended the school.
Clover Park offers summer sessions
Clover Park School District will offer summer school sessions beginning June 20 for elementary, middle and high school students.
Classes will be at Four Heroes, Hillside, Park Lodge and Idlewild elementary schools, Lakeview Hope Academy and Lochburn and Woodbrook middle schools.
Summer school will be offered to incoming ninth-grade students at Clover Park and Lakes high schools.

Teachers recognized by Air Force Association
The McChord Field Air Force Association has awarded its middle school and high school chapter Teachers of the Year.
Honored were Michael Martin, a math teacher at Pioneer Middle School in the Steilacoom Historic School District, and John Devine, a physics teacher at SAMI in the Tacoma School District.
The two have shown initiative in educating and motivating students in science, technology, engineering and math.
Meet finalists for principal posts in Steilacoom schools
The Steilacoom Historic School District will host two forums for the public to meet and ask questions of finalists for the principal positions at two schools.
The first forum will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Pioneer Middle School cafeteria, 1750 Bob’s Hollow Lane, DuPont.
The second will be at 7 p.m. June 13 at Steilacoom High School Theater, 54 Sentinel Drive.
Safety patrol honors for Clover Park district
Kloe Salazar and Marie Lanham, both of the Clover Park School District, recently received safety patrol honors.
Salazar of Dower Elementary School is one of 10 students in the state inducted into the AAA School Safety Patrol Hall of Fame.
Lanham, a paraeducator from Hillside Elementary School, was recognized as the 2016 Safety Patrol Adviser of the Year.
