Always a pleasure to talk to World War II veterans like Douglas Scott, the subject of today's column.

If you'd like to go to lunch with between 15 and 20 local vets, your opportunity comes Saturday at 1 p.m. when American Legion Post 187 hosts a Lakewood luncheon in their honor.

The lunch is free - donations are welcome but not required - and the lunch will be served at the People's Plaza, 9315 Gravelly Lake Drive, #102.

Among those invited is Scott. Sit near him if you can. He'll make you laugh, and maybe cry.

This space won’t be vacant Monday. Various news stories, features and photos will easily fit it. For the past three years, though, this column appeared nearly every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday — as did the people, characters, cats and dogs and two pigs who inhabited it.
