Tacoma man died in head-on car collision Sunday in Northeast Tacoma, police say

A 25-year-old Tacoma man died Sunday when he lost control of the car he was driving on Marine View Drive and collided head on with a vehicle going the opposite direction, according to police.

The collision was reported at about 9:25 a.m. near 1690 Marine View Dr. on state Route 509, a Tacoma Police Department spokesperson said. A witness reportedly saw the driver blow through a stop sign at high speed before the wreck. Police said he was going north in a Nissan Maxima when he lost control at a curve in the road, crossed the center line and struck a southbound Mazda SUV.

Police said the man was the only person in his vehicle. He has not been publicly identified. His car came to a stop on railroad tracks. It was reportedly torn in two.

The car he struck was occupied by a 33-year-old woman, TPD spokesperson Wendy Haddow said. She said the woman was transported to a local hospital for injuries sustained from her seat belt.

Marine View Drive was closed to southbound traffic at Norpoint Way Northeast for about four hours while a collision investigation team and forensic investigators responded, Haddow said.
