Driver injured in drive-by shooting on Tacoma highway, troopers say. Witnesses sought

A shooting investigation is underway on state Route 16 near the Nalley Valley Viaduct in Tacoma on Wednesday.

Two people were inside a vehicle when a dark-colored sedan pulled up and opened fire on it close to 8:40 a.m. The 35-year-old driver was struck in the shoulder and has non-life threatening injuries, according to Washington State Patrol Trooper John Dattilo.

The victim was driving a black 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee on the interchange ramp from southbound I-5 to westbound state Route 16 when the drive-by occurred. A female passenger in the Jeep was unharmed, a WSP news release said.

Witnesses described the alleged shooter as a light-skinned Black male driver. There was also a female passenger in the sedan, the release said. The sedan drove away after the shooting and continued onto westbound state Route 16.

A motive has not been released.

Witnesses were unable to provide further details about the suspects or their vehicle, the release said.

WSP says that anyone who witnessed the shooting or who may have more information regarding the suspects and their vehicle are asked to contact Detective Brooke Bova by phone at 360-701-8284 or at brooke.bova@wsp.wa.gov.

The exit ramp to westbound state Route 16 from southbound I-5 was closed. There were backups and delays on southbound I-5 at milepost 132. All drivers were able to access the HOV lane, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

WSDOT said that traffic backups and delays on I-5 southbound near state Route 16 is cleared.
