Backup on Narrows Bridge caused by woman threatening to jump

A 53-year-old woman threatening to jump off the eastbound Tacoma Narrows Bridge caused a major traffic backup Monday.

More than 20 people called 911 shortly after 7 a.m. to report a woman was standing with one leg over the railing, Washington State Patrol trooper Guy Gill said.

Officials closed the right lane of eastbound state Route 16. Traffic backed up past Wollochet Drive Northwest.

Tacoma police negotiators were called to talk the woman down. Officers also were on a boat under the bridge.

About 10:45 a.m., police were able to escort the woman off the bridge.

Gill said she was taken to a hospital for treatment.
