A 65-year-old Gig Harbor man died Wednesday after his pickup truck went off an overpass in Lakewood and hit a semi on southbound Interstate 5, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Traffic backups extended for miles in both directions.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as Jay Kirk.

Troopers believe he might have suffered a medical emergency because there were no brake marks on the Berkeley Avenue overpass from which his truck fell.

The collision occurred about 6:45 a.m. near Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Debris from the accident, including the hood of the pickup, was thrown into northbound lanes.

The semi driver was not hurt. Kirk was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The State Patrol conducted what it termed an “extended investigation,” which closed two southbound lanes and one northbound lane.

Stalled southbound traffic extended more than 5 miles and northbound backups were about 4 miles, according to the state Department of Transportation.

Trooper Guy Gill said the southbound lanes of I-5 reopened by 10:30 a.m.
