Extra law enforcement officers will be patrolling Pierce County streets in a Click It or Ticket campaign that launched Monday.
The enforcement campaign, which aims to encourage seat belt use, will end June 5.
A seat belt ticket is $136.
Participants include officers from Bonney Lake, Fife, Fircrest, Gig Harbor, Lakewood, Puyallup, Sumner, Tacoma and University Place, as well as the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department and the Washington State Patrol.
About 95 percent of people in Washington wear seat belts, according to a 2015 survey conducted by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.
Still, 100 or so people die each year in crashes statewide after not buckling up.
Eight people in Pierce County died and 18 were seriously injured in 2015 traffic crashes, in part due to not buckling up, statistics from the Traffic Safety Commission show.
