Southbound I-5 will be a mess between Tukwila and Des Moines this weekend
If your travels take you north of Tukwila this weekend, be warned that it might take you longer than usual to get home.
Construction will severely curtail the number of lanes open on southbound Interstate 5 between the Interstate 405 interchange in Tukwila and the state Route 516 interchange near Des Moines, the state Department of Transportation reported.
The closures begin at 8 p.m. Friday and will be in effect until 5 a.m. Monday. All lanes but the HOV lane will be closed at times, with multiple lane closures in place at most hours.
A number of ramps also will be closed, including the southbound I-405 ramp to I-5; the South 188th Street/Orilla Road South on-ramp to southbound I-5; and the southbound I-5 off- and on-ramps at South 200th Street/Military Road South.
The lane closures are part of a $27.3 million project that will:
▪ Replace 235 concrete panels and expansion joints on the Duwamish River bridge.
▪ Repave I-5 between South 188th Street in SeaTac and South 219th Street in Des Moines.
▪ Resurface the freeway by grinding out ruts and cracks in several locations.
