Weeks ago, retiree David Schultze bought an Oregon’s Game Megabucks ticket.

The 68-year-old Milwaukie man, who “doesn’t play much,” picked up his ticket from a grocery store in Gladstone, Oregon Lottery said in a Feb. 27 news release.

“When he sees the jackpot ‘getting up there,’ he can’t help but buy a ticket — just in case,” the release said.

While the winning numbers were drawn on Jan. 24, Schultze didn’t bother to check his ticket anytime soon, according to lottery officials.

Instead, Schultze waited to check his ticket just one day shy of a month after the winning numbers had been drawn, lottery officials said.

He had been holding onto an $8.4 million winning ticket for weeks, the release said.

After spending the “whole weekend in shock,” Schultze finally made his way to an Oregon Lottery office to claim his ticket on Monday, Feb. 26, the release said.

He plans to invest most of his winnings, the release said.

“There are no plans for any big splurges,” lottery officials said.

Gladstone is about 13 miles southeast of Portland.
