Train stops just in time to avoid hitting man pushed onto tracks, Oregon cops say
A man was shoved onto train tracks as the light rail approached the station in Oregon, deputies said.
It stopped just in time.
The rider was waiting at about 4:19 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21, at Portland’s Providence Park Metropolitan Area Express station, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
He was suddenly shoved onto the tracks by a stranger who then ran off, deputies said.
The TriMet MAX Light Rail operator applied the emergency brakes and stopped before hitting the man, deputies said.
Deputies said they found the rider with minor injuries.
The 31-year-old man accused of pushing the rider, Michael Lynn Moreland, was found about 20 minutes later after authorities got multiple calls about thefts in the area, deputies said.
He was arrested on multiple charges, per the release, including:
- Second-degree attempted murder
- Second-degree attempted assault
- Fourth-degree assault
- Third-degree robbery
- Second-degree criminal mischief
- Third-degree escape
- Second-degree disorderly conduct
- Interfering with public transportation
He could face additional charges, deputies said.
The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to McClatchy News’ request for more information on May 22.
