Pierce County Council chairman back to work after bicycle accident

Pierce County Council Chairman Dan Roach was back to work Thursday after breaking his collarbone and three ribs in a bicycle accident.

The Bonney Lake Republican fell when a dog ran in front of his bicycle while he was riding Aug. 23 on West Tapps Highway in Bonney Lake.

The 41-year-old councilman had been recovering at home since the accident.

Roach said his triathlon bicycle hit the medium-sized dog that ran in front of him. Roach landed on the highway.

“It happened so fast I had no time to react,” Roach said.

He was taken by East Pierce Fire & Rescue to Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup.

Roach was training for the Black Diamond Half Ironman on Sept. 13, which combines bicycling, swimming and running.

“That’s out, “ Roach said.

On Thursday, Roach walked into a county Performance Audit Commitee meeting with his right arm in a sling.

“I’m feeling a lot better,” he told a reporter.
