White Tacoma firefighters and police officers held crisp salutes to the deeply polished black brims of their hats, old men put gnarled fingers over their hearts and young children stood at attention Wednesday as Tacoma’s biggest flag was raised at Thea’s Park on the Foss Waterway.
The Harbor Flag - 20-by-38-feet - was solemnly raised atop a 100 foot pole facing Commencement Bay, then slowly lowered to half-staff during a dedication attended by more than 1,500 people.
The flag, a steel global and a peace pole proclaiming “May Peace Prevail On Earth” were dedicated as symbols of hope in remembrance of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on America.
School children, city officials, labor unions, community organizations and trades workers donated money to build the flag plaza on the waterfront.
