Special Reports

Construction this week on the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge:

Anchors: Progress slowed last week on the placement of caisson anchors because of a shortage of chain.

More of the huge chain - each link weighs 240 pounds - is expected to clear customs on Friday, according to the Department of Transportation.

Five of the 62 anchors remain to be set.

Caissons: Two more large concrete pours are scheduled this week on the two caissons under construction at the Port of Tacoma.

The caisson that will support the tower on the Tacoma side of the bridge is to be towed to the Tacoma Narrows on the morning of July 21.

Roadwork: Tacoma Narrows Constructors crews hoisted two more girders onto the new overpass at 24th Street Northwest on Friday. The final girders are to be placed Monday.

Traffic interruptions: Watch for westbound lane closures Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights on Highway 16 between 24th and 36th streets in Gig Harbor.

Crews will be restriping lanes and setting up a concrete barrier to facilitate work on the new westbound on-ramp at 24th Street.
