Special Reports

Construction this week on the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge:

Caissons: Dockside concrete work on the Tacoma side caisson is finished, and preparations are under way to haul it to the bridge site July 21.

The Gig Harbor caisson, now 40 feet high, will have 10 more feet of concrete added Friday.

Roadwork: Watch for work on new retaining walls this week near the old Span Deli on the Gig Harbor side and near the former War Memorial Park in Tacoma.

Nighttime work will continue on rebuilding shoulders on eastbound Highway 16, near Jackson Avenue in Tacoma. Watch for right-lane closures from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Anchorages: Engineers are testing soil conditions at both ends of the bridge in preparation for the installation of shoring walls to be used during excavation.

Q. Sometimes I see groups of bridge construction workers huddling up for stretching exercises early in the morning. What gives?

A. That's part of Tacoma Narrows Constructors' safety program. Doing the stretcher-benders before shifts reduces injuries and accidents, the company says.

A public meeting to discuss TNC's permit application for placing a mooring buoy 1,500 feet off Fox Island is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at Fox Island's Nichols Community Center.

If approved, the buoy will be used to anchor a barge containing construction materials.
