A construction barge being used to attach anchors to the new Tacoma Narrows bridge began taking on water Wednesday, forcing crews to beach it for repairs.
The barge's hull was punctured when it ran up against the caisson recently hauled to the eastern side of the bridge, said Claudia Cornish, a state Department of Transportation spokeswoman.
Thursday, Tacoma Narrows Constructors hauled the barge across the Narrows to Doc Weathers Park and began welding the holes shut.
Cornish said the barge probably would be back in service today.
