Construction this week on the new Tacoma Narrows bridge:

Crews will start clearing forested land between Highway 16 and 14th Avenue Northwest in Gig Harbor this week so they can set up a 10,000-square-foot office building, staging area and parking lot.

Expect rapid progress. The development is to be finished by Aug. 18.

Caissons: The Tacoma-side caisson is securely anchored, with 14 of 16 anchors attached as of Friday. The first concrete pour on that caisson is scheduled for Aug. 15.

At the Port of Tacoma, concrete work has been completed on the Gig Harbor caisson. It's set to be towed to the Narrows on Aug. 18.

Roadways: The concrete deck on the new overpass at 24th Street Northwest in Gig Harbor has been poured and is curing. The overpass is scheduled to open about Labor Day.

Q. Has the Department of Transportation decided whether to put up screening on the bridge to keep people from gawking at construction?

A. There's won't be any screening. Engineers were worried about how it would affect the stability of the bridge in the wind. Also, once work starts on the towers, it would be too low to do any good.
