Construction this week on the new Tacoma Narrows bridge:

Toll plaza: Crews will start to clear the area for the toll plaza on the Gig Harbor side of the construction site.

The plaza will be on the eastbound side of Highway 16, just before the 24th Street overpass.

Anchorage: A concrete pour on the east anchorage is scheduled for Wednesday.

Dirt: On the Tacoma side of the bridge project, crews will start removing dirt around the on-ramp from Jackson Avenue to westbound Highway 16.

The dirt will be moved to near the off-ramp from eastbound 16 to Jackson.

About midweek, crews will start building a retaining wall under Jackson Avenue.

Trucks will return to the old War Memorial Park to remove tainted soil and take it to a landfill. Tests have shown levels of arsenic and lead in the dirt on the northern side of the existing bridge. The work will last about two weeks.

Caissons: Crews have excavated down nine feet on the Tacoma side caisson and plan to be done with the round of dredging on Thursday.

A concrete pour is scheduled Wednesday for the Gig Harbor caisson.

Streets: On Saturday, 22nd Avenue Northwest was reopened to traffic. The road had been closed except to local residents since last summer while crews elevated and realigned the roadway.
